holben Store · Founded in 1892, the Hamilton Watch Company of Lancaster, PA would not officially start its watch production until March 1894, having first chosen the name Columbian Watch Co. but this name was already copyrighted by the Waterbury Co. The name Hamilton was derived from Lancaster’s founding father, Mr. Andrew Hamilton, a Scottish-born attorney who was instrumental in the growth of Lancaster. By 1908 Hamilton was producing a lady’s pendant watch and during the WWI period a small line of military style watches were available for men. Hamilton never looked back, arguably producing the highest quality American made watches from the 1920s through the 1960s. I am pleased to offer for sale the following men’s Hamilton timepiece – a “SQUARE” model in 14kt Solid Green Gold. This watch dates to ca 1927 and is truly rarer than hens’ teeth – only 804 of these were Square Engraved were made in 14k solid green gold, as compared to 4,519 with a non-engraved bezel (source: Rene Rondeau “Hamilton Wristwatches”). I would not be surprised if only a hundred of these survive today. This triple-signed model is in excellent condition inside and out, measuring 35mm end to end and 28.5mm in width (30mm with crown). This works out to be 1-3/8 inches by just over 1-1/8 inches. My watchmaker David has fully serviced its original 17 jewel, 987 grade mechanism and it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. The matte enamel finished dial is in MINT condition, professionally restored to mimic a perfectly aged radium dial (but perfectly safe). It features a checkered 60 minute outer track, radium (look only) Arabic numbers, original blued steel skeleton hands and a recessed round seconds dial with ‘sweep’ original blue steel seconds hand. Signed HAMILTON below the 12. The solid glass crystal is cut corner in design and in excellent condition. The three-piece 14 Karat Solid Green Gold case is in excellent PLUS condition, complete with engraved bezel and case sides. As I noted earlier, only 804 of these were ever made. The winding crown is a later replacement in excellent shape, operating as it should. Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is also 14 Karat Solid Green Gold and in excellent condition with no wear or engravings, past or present. Inside I find a freshly serviced (cleaned, oiled and regulated) 6/0 size Seventeen Jewel manual wind movement with fancy Geneva striping signed Hamilton Watch Co., 4,078,094 – [Grade] 987, 17 Jewels. The inside of the case lid is stamped HAMILTON WATCH CO., FAHYS – 14K SOLID GOLD with case number 298974. Please note that the body of the watch (that surrounds the mechanism) is also stamped with the last four digits of this number (8974) in addition to “14K” for solid gold. This watch has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted with a new 16mm black deBeer hand crafted lizard grain strap with gold finished buckle for a nice look. All an all an excellent example of an ultra-scarce American wristwatch- if you think the photos look good you’re going to be more impressed with it on your wrist! Looking for more vintage watches?
